Rule update

What changed for learner drivers on 1 July 2026

Denmark modernised the driving education. Lessons became modules, theory now comes before the matching practice, and new subjects were added to the curriculum. The theory test itself kept its format, so your practice here still counts.

Five modules

Loose lessons were replaced by five modules. You move to the next module once the goals of the current one are met.

Theory before practice

You must cover the theory of a topic before you practise that topic on the road. You may run ahead in theory, but not behind it.

Some theory at home

Part of the theory may now be given as self-study. Classroom theory is still a required part of the education.

New subjects in the curriculum

The teaching plan for category B was reissued as version 1.1 (May 2026) and applies from 1 July 2026. Alongside the familiar traffic rules it now covers:

  • Electric and hybrid cars, and how they differ to drive.
  • Driver assistance systems, including sign recognition and what such systems can and cannot do.
  • Energy-efficient and environmentally aware driving.
  • Self-evaluation, own attitudes and risk blindness — a new theme about judging your own driving.

On the practical side, lessons on the closed practice area went from four to three, and some parking exercises moved out onto public roads.

Did the theory test change?

No. The test is still 25 questions in 25 minutes, and you pass with a maximum of five mistakes. What changed is the education that leads up to it — the order it is taught in, and the subjects it must cover.

If you started before 1 July 2026

There is a transition period until 31 December 2026: learners who began under the old rules may finish under them. After that, everyone follows the modular education. Your driving school knows which set applies to you — ask them if you are mid-course.

Practice does not need to wait

The question format did not move. Start with the free starter test, then work through the full library and the exam vocabulary.
